Creators on Instagram and TikTok have people questioning, “Is bong water good for plants?” and the short answer is no. But why is that?
As your friendly neighbourhood cannabis retailer, we’re here to discuss what’s in your bong water, how it affects plants, and how to properly dispose of it once you’re done enjoying your favourite flower.
Bongs are a popular choice for smokers because they offer a smooth and enjoyable experience. But before we discuss why it’s not a good idea to use bong water for plants, let’s first learn what it is.
As the name suggests, bong water is the liquid used in a water pipe or bong to filter and cool cannabis smoke before inhalation. However, while it’s called “water,” this liquid isn’t just composed of simple H2O.
As smoke passes through the water it leaves behind various harmful substances. Dirty bong water will often contain:
Stagnant bong water may also contain certain kinds of bacteria from your mouth and hands—both of which house a variety of microorganisms. If the water is left stagnant for a long time, these bacteria can multiply and potentially form biofilms. Yikes!

It’s safe to say that drinking bong water is out of the question, right? But does it help plants grow? The answer to this question is also no—bong water doesn’t help plants grow.
While bong water can contain trace minerals and bacteria that may be helpful for plants (like natural fertilizer from decomposing plant matter), watering plants with it will likely do more harm than good. The presence of tar, ash, resin, and other harmful toxins generally outweighs the potential benefits of the good minerals and bacteria.
Besides, plants typically thrive in specific pH ranges. Most plants prefer a slightly acidic to neutral soil pH ranging from 6.0 to 7.5. Bong water tends to be on the acidic end, and this acidity can disrupt the soil’s pH balance, potentially leading to nutrient lockout, root damage, or disruption in the soil’s microorganisms.
Even if you want to use bong water for plants in your own cannabis garden, it’s still not a good idea. Cannabis plants are particularly sensitive to pH levels, so using highly acidic bong water may cause more harm than good.
If you want to prioritize plant health, we recommend sticking to fresh water, compost tea, and other safer alternatives for watering plants.
Aside from the ones we’ve mentioned above, using bong water for plants comes with more risks and hazards worth considering. Here are some of them:

We’ve answered, “Is bong water good for plants?” with a hard no—so what can you do with it?
Sadly, dirty water from any type of bong isn’t very reusable or recyclable. At most, you can use it to kill unwanted weeds in your garden. Aside from that, the simplest and safest way to get rid of bong water is to dispose of it.
When throwing away used bong water, it’s best to pour it outside, if possible. Pouring it down sinks and toilets may cause resin buildup in your plumbing over time. However, if you clean your bong regularly and choose to pour it down the drain, make sure to follow these steps:
You may also pour the bong water into a sealable container and add an absorbent material like coffee grounds or kitty litter. Then, seal the container and dispose of it in your regular trash.
Some people dispose of bong water by pouring it into a small dish and letting it evaporate.
