How to Store Weed to Keep it Fresh and Sticky

So you’ve just purchased some Pink Kush and Jet Fuel Gelato from the friendly cannabis dispensary next door—but you’re now wondering how to store your sticky buds to keep them fresh and dank.

True North Cannabis Co., Ontario’s largest retail cannabis shop, has got you covered with everything you need to know about weed storage.

Welcome to “How To Store Weed 101.”

From temperature and humidity levels to the proper containers to preserve flavour, we’ll show you how to store weed the right way.

Optimal Storage Conditions for Your Buds

Among all the types of cannabis products, flowers are especially delicate. Mould, mildew, humidity, sunlight, and rapid temperature changes are its biggest enemies. One wrong move and your cannabis just won’t be as good as you expect it to be.

But if you store them according to the tips below, you’ll be able to preserve their quality to give you the exact experience you were looking for

Temperature

If you’ve been worrying about how to store weed at the perfect temperature, you’ll be glad to find out that the key degree is anything under 21 C (60-70 F) and above 0 C (32 F).

It’s important to keep in mind that you should be consistent with the temperatures you store your cannabis in until you’re ready to use it. And don’t shock your buds by storing them at 17 C for a few weeks and then suddenly toss them into the freezer at -5 C. This will drastically affect their overall texture, smell, and taste.

While you might value your product very much and want to put the spotlight on it, it’s not a good idea to expose them to bright lighting or sunlight. UV rays can impact potency and overall quality. That’s why we recommend keeping your weed in the dark

Humidity

Just like how humidity can give you bad hair days, it can also make your cannabis go bad.

Too little humidity could cause your weed to dry out. On the other hand, mould and mildew thrive in humid spaces. This is why it’s essential to monitor the levels at which your products are stored. By using a hygrometer, you can be sure that your weed’s space has the ideal humidity levels of 59 – 63%

Individual Containers

With such a diverse range of strains available, it’s only natural to stock up on your favourites, plus some new ones too. Each individual strain profile, including their growing techniques, production methods, origins, and many more elements are what makes each product unique—so you wouldn’t want these flavours to get mixed together.

Let’s say you have a couple grams of Cocoa Bomba and some Fruity Pebbles OG, it’s recommended to store them separately in their own “personal space” so that they don’t drown each other out.

How to Store Weed: The Do’s

Considering how delicate cannabis is, you’re probably wondering how to store it so it stays fresh and true to its original form. Your best bet is with air-tight jars.

Here are two easy ways you can store your weed with things you probably already have lying around the house:

Store Your Stash in Air-Tight Jars

Air-tight jars are a great choice of container if you’re thinking about how to store weed. Quart-sized mason jars are a highly recommended type because they can protect your flowers from moisture and air while helping to retain potency, flavour, and smell.

If you choose this storage option, remember to leave a few inches of space in the jar to reduce the amount of air that gets stored along with the cannabis.

Or, Opt for Vacuum Sealed Bags

Vacuum sealing is a great (and more affordable) option for those who want to keep their weed fresh for more prolonged periods of time. This method eliminates oxygen, prevents mould and bacteria from growing, and reduces the chances of it drying out.

You might be worried about some buds breaking off in the process, but the trick is to stop your vacuum sealing machine right before it sucks too much air out and causes breakage.

Once they’re sealed in a clean bag, keep them away from sunlight.

How to Store Weed: The Don’ts

Don’t Store Weed in Plastic Containers

Plastic containers tend to negatively impact the natural smell, flavour, and potency of cannabis. Moisture or static could build up and cause trichomes to break off or the quality to deteriorate.

Never Store Weed in the Refrigerator or Freezer

Storing your weed in the refrigerator or freezer is a sure-fire way to make your buds mould. This is because these types of environments usually don’t match the ideal temperature and are too humid for your weed.
