CBD, or cannabidiol, is the second-most prevalent active ingredient found in the cannabis plant. While THC is responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis, CBD is hailed for its pain relieving and calming properties. In recent years, CBD has been studied for its potential to reduce the symptoms of certain ailments, including anxiety.
The link between CBD and anxiety continues to tighten, with research and studies gaining more momentum. So, how can CBD treat anxiety?
It’s World Mental Health Day on October 10, and in this post, True North Cannabis Co. will shed some light on how prevalent anxiety is, and how CBD could work to reduce its symptoms.
CBD and Anxiety: Why CBD Works
Having anxiety is as common as one might think. In fact, an article in the Dialogues of Clinical Neuroscience states that anxiety is the most common psychiatric condition. In Canada, this is reflected in the statistic that in any given year, 1 in every 5 adults will experience one type of anxiety disorder.
While more research is needed, it is believed that CBD abates anxiety the same way it eases chronic pain, which is by changing and modifying serotonin levels. Separate research suggests that amplifying serotonin levels can help treat anxiety, which is what antidepressants do. Additionally, some studies suggest that CBD could work similarly to anti-anxiety medications, and the fact that it’s natural and plant-based makes it more appealing to the masses.
In separate studies conducted on mice, CBD showed effects similar to what antidepressants would create. These qualities are related to CBD’s efficacy to take action on the brain’s receptors to produce serotonin, a neurotransmitter that works on regulating social behaviour and mood.
This explains why one feels slightly relaxed when ingesting CBD-infused edibles, oils, or sprays.

CBD and Anxiety: Products to Help Reduce Symptoms
While there are many different strains that offer anxiety-reducing effects, some prefer to go smoke-less. This is why products related to CBD and anxiety are ever-evolving. Here are some examples of products that you can ingest or apply topically.
CBD Oil
In several studies, CBD oil has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety. To be specific, one study involved participants taking CBD oil capsules before going through a simulated public speaking test. Researchers found that those who took 300mg of CBD showed reduced anxiety during the test.
This CBD oil by Peace Naturals contains up to 79% CBD and is naturally flavoured with a hint of peppermint, giving you little to no cannabis taste. Take a few drops orally, or mix it with some hot tea when winding down for the evening.
CBD Edibles
There are many different types of edibles that contain varying amounts of CBD. This Cucumber Mint Sparkling Water has 20% CBD, and can be a refreshing treat at any time of day. If you’re looking for something sweet and tangy, a pack of Sour Raspberry Gummies can do the trick. It has equal amounts of CBD and THC (10%) for a balanced buzz.
CBD Topicals, Sprays, and Masks
Topicals, masks, and sprays are a fairly new development and show just how evolved products are for CBD and anxiety. Ideal for those who neither want to smoke or ingest, these fast-absorbing products provide a relaxing sensation on the skin.
This hydrating CBD body lotion has 500% CBD, and eases the feeling of dryness and itchiness on the skin.
Another favourite of ours is this all-natural Charcoal Face Mask – the perfect way to end a tiring day. The mask contains quality kaolin clay to deep clean pores and absorbs excess oil. It also includes ingredients like aloe, shea butter, green tea extract, and 500% CBD for relaxed facial rejuvenation.
