Budtender Strain of the Month: Pure Sunfarms Area 51

Good news: this extraterrestrial strain comes in peace!

The Area 51 strain is out of this world, combining herbal, peppery, and gassy aromas with notes of soft, creamy fruit, oatmeal, mint, and a soft funk. But don’t be fooled by these *soft* notes because this sativa-indica hybrid delivers a hefty dose of THC.

Speaking of THC, the Area 51 strain averages 22-28%, with its CBD content sitting around 0-1%.

If you seek pleasant flavours, instant feelings of euphoria, and a relaxed mind, then look no further than Pure Sunfarms’ Area 51. Now, all aboard the spaceship as we take a planetary tour to learn what makes it so special!

A Brief History of the Area 51 Strain

Running diagnostic scans…

It seems the strain owes its greatness to its parents: Miracle Alien Cookies (MAC 1) and Gas Cake. The name “Area 51” is also an ode to the top-secret U.S. Air Force military installation situated at Groom Lake in southern Nevada.

The producers behind this strain, Pure Sunfarms, initially operated as farmers of tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. Today, on the same land in Delta, British Columbia, they’ve expanded to growing cannabis in one of the province’s sunniest spots.

Their custom-designed greenhouse for growing cannabis sits on a site where they’ve collected environmental data for decades. As such, they have a next-level understanding of the subtleties of their site’s climate and how to get the most out of it.

Area 51 Strain Profile

Hold on—our scans are producing more data. It seems we’ve got information on this strain’s characteristics, including its appearance, aroma, flavours, and terpene profile!

Appearance:

Area 51 has tight green buds, deep purple tips, and curled sugar leaves. Some even say the tapered and pointiness of its leaves are rocket ship-esque. We’ll speak for ourselves on this, but to us, it seems more than ready to take us to new highs.

Aroma and Flavours:

Potentially due to its unique growing conditions, the Area 51 strain doesn’t disappoint in either the aroma or flavour departments.

On first inhalation, you’ll instantly be immersed in the aromas of fresh herbs, peppercorn, and diesel. These elements are elevated by flavours of creamy fruit, oatmeal, mint, and a soft funk. While not immediately Earthly, these flavours sure do hit the spot.

Terpene Profile:

Readings on the terpenes in Pure Sunfarms’ Area 51 are as follows:

  • Humulene;
  • Terpineol; and
  • Limonene.

Terpenes are naturally occurring substances and aromatic oils that give plants their smell, taste, and sometimes, colours.

Strain Effects

The data says Area 51 by Pure Sunfarms might be perfect for those who are in the mood to be giggly, calm, energetic, happy, relaxed, and focused.

This strain offers a smooth smoke and high potency often paired with feelings of euphoria. Overall, its focused head high and relaxed body high is probably best saved for after work and evenings. Start low and go slow, space explorer.

How the Area 51 Strain Is Grown

Pure Sunfarms’ Area 51 strain is grown using a 100% pesticide-free process. Each plant is grown in a coconut husk fibre (also known as ‘coir’) and fed a Health Canada-approved proprietary plant food.

Growing this out-of-this-world strain is generally considered to be difficult—sorry rookies, this one is for the pros. The Pure Sunfarms flower is produced in a high-tech greenhouse with mixed lighting. During the summer months, growers harness the power of the sun, and during the fall and winter, supplemental lighting is required.

You’ll find that the flowering time ranges from 56 to 63 days, while the harvest time stands at approximately 71 days. Its flowers are hang-dried, machine-trimmed, and hand-groomed.

When grown indoors, you can expect a yield of around 300 grams per square metre and a height of 30 to 60 inches. On the other hand, outdoor growers tend to yield 400 grams per plant.

A Similar Strain Worth Trying

We’ve come across another extraterrestrial hybrid strain on our journey, Area 51’s half-sibling: Alien Fuel. Created by cross-breeding Jet Fuel Gelato and MAC-1, we fully expect this one to rock your world, too.

If you’re looking to try a strain with similar flavours, give Amnesia Haze a try. It’s got earthy, zesty, and spicy notes that’ll almost mask its potency. Sitting at 23%, this sativa’s effects will have you feeling energetic, creative, and focused.
