Ontario’s Largest Cannabis Retailer Opens Dispensary in Mississauga

MISSISSAUGA, Oct. 11, 2023 – True North Cannabis Co.’s newest dispensary marks a significant milestone as the company’s 50th location in Ontario since its founding in 2020. This move coincides with Mississauga’s decision to lift its prohibition on cannabis retail stores earlier this year.

In April, Mississauga City Council voted 8-4 in favour of Resolution 0103-2023, allowing cannabis retailers to operate legally within its city limits. This decision came nearly five years after the federal government passed the Cannabis Act legalizing recreational cannabis use.  Mississauga was one of dozens of other municipal governments in Ontario that chose to retain autonomy over whether or not to have stores in their cities.

“Mississauga has been cautious and examined the experience of other cities over the past five years before opting into retail cannabis stores,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie in a news release on behalf of the Mississauga city council. “While we wish cities had more control in terms of locations and licensing, the experience of other cities that have opted in has generally been positive and without major issues. We welcome the opportunity for residents to be able to more easily and conveniently access legal cannabis at retailers and the businesses and jobs it will create in our city.”
